Too often we find ourselves forced to write about the Anthony Abbates of the Chicago Police, the out-of-control cops who give all officers a bad name.
So it is welcome news and entirely right that a new survey shows that the vast majority of Chicagoans hold a positive view of the police. More than 80 percent say they were somewhat satisfied, or even very satisfied, with their most recent encounters with officers.
What does this mean? That people are smart when it comes to cops. They know the Abbates are the exception, far from the rule. And they know the police are there for them.
Police Supt. Garry McCarthy and his officers can take pride in this, and build on it to create even greater trust in every neighborhood.
