As Sen. Mark Kirk recovers from a stroke, he should know this:
His hard-earned Senate seat is waiting for him.
Sen. Kirk suffered the stroke over the weekend, one year into his six-year term. His recovery will take months, we’re told, and be tough.
But we have no doubt the good people of Illinois, Republicans and Democrats alike, will wait patiently. They will cheer him on. They will welcome his return.
Sen. Dick Durbin has offered to do “anything” to help Kirk with his Senate duties. And Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin, who was to be Kirk’s seatmate at Tuesday’s State of the Union address, says, “I promised Mark that I will keep his seat warm.” Similar sentiments have come in from fellow Republicans.
Early signs from the hard-charging Kirk are encouraging. He’s asked for his BlackBerry.
Get better, Sen. Kirk, but take your time.
We’ll keep the light on for you.
