Cubs in the playoffs

Is it in the stars for Cubs?

What will it take for the North Siders to make a special playoff run? Solid pitching, good hitting and, according to Chicago astrologer Grant Wylie, the planet Mercury turning retrograde

October 3, 2007

In predicting the Cubs' playoff chances, most fans consider the stats and the lineups, but astrologers consider the cosmos.

Chicago astrologer Grant Wylie predicts the Cubs will lose this week's games in Arizona, but be victorious in Chicago on Saturday.

"The energies of Jupiter are combining unfavorably with the asteroid Lilith," he said.

That impacts the horoscope of Lou Piniella, who will have a harder time managing larger players, such as 255-pounder Carlos Zambrano, he said.

"The big guys may not do as well for him on the road," he said.

Astrologers believe human events can be interpreted from the position and movement of celestial bodies. Wylie said that people who scoff simply don't understand.

Sun-Times horoscope columnist Georgia Nichols said before offering specific predictions about the Cubs, she needs to know what time of day each player was born.

"But I can definitely say it's a good year for Chicago," she said.

Wylie said life will get easier for the Cubs after Oct. 11, if the team perseveres. That's when the planet Mercury turns retrograde -- appears to be moving backward through the zodiac -- usually a period of bad luck for most people.

But it's not bad luck for the Cubs since five top players were born during a retrograde Mercury, Wylie said.

"Their luck will get better as the month goes on," he said.

And if they make it to the World Series?

"Fortune is going to favor them," he said.
