He’s an alum, so where’s his alumni discount for doctoral work?

Dear Fixer: I am a current graduate student at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Last summer I finished up my M.A. in industrial organizational psychology and was automatically admitted into the doctoral portion of the program.
As such, I was supposed to be eligible for an alumni credit of $1,000 per semester. I have since been enrolled for a total of three semesters since my M.A. completion date. However, I was not given the credit.
I was only recently made aware of this credit by some classmates who received it without having to do any legwork.
Once I found this out I began calling the school and have been sent in a massive, ever-widening and maddening circle with no end in sight. The only answer I have received is that there is no chance that they would give me the back credit, which they owe me. This I find to be ridiculous and unacceptable. If it were the other way around, there is no way I would get away with that.
I could really use your help.

Dear Michael: Seeing as how you already have your master’s degree diploma and are even receiving alumni solicitations in the mail from IIT, we’re guessing you should qualify for the alumni tuition credit.
We’re not sure why no one could address this for you, but when The Fixer took it to Jeanne Hartig, IIT’s VP of marketing and communications, it got fixed in a hurry.
Hartig was able to get your problem to the right person who could re-code your file as an alum and retroactively give you the credits. (She said you were coded correctly for this semester and got that credit.)
In addition to the $2,000 in back-credits, they’re also waiving $42.39 in late fees that were on your account. Going forward, you’ll continue to get the $1,000 credit each semester until you finish your doctorate degree.
Dear Fixer: Last March, I submitted applications for notary public commissions for me and my daughter to the Illinois Notary Federation in Springfield. I sent them a $40 money order for each of us, for a total of $80. The money orders were cashed.
To date, I have not received a processed application nor a refund of my money for my daughter’s application. My application has been processed.
I have called more than 20 times, as well as sent many faxes requesting either the processing of her application or the return of the $40. No one answers the phone, the voice mail system is full and no one responds to faxes, either.

Dear Renee: You told us you only received your notary commission after complaining to the company, and even then it took several months. Your daughter’s application, however, seems to have fallen into the abyss. Our calls and emails to Illinois Notary Federation since mid-October have gone unanswered. Not too surprisingly, they have an “F” rating with the Better Business Bureau. (Hey, Jason Gold, Illinois Notary Federation president: If you’re reading this column, give Renee back her 40 bucks!)

Dear Fixer: I was checking my DirecTV bill and found that I was being charged $6 for a receiver that was taken out and replaced with an HD receiver some years ago. With no questions asked, I was credited with $335. Others may want to look at their bill if they went HD.
