BAGHDAD — Iraqi authorities say a suicide bomber has killed 12 people in a cafe in a Shiite-majority town in central Iraq.
Police said that the suicide bomber detonated his explosive belt Monday evening inside a cafe in Balad, 60 miles north of Baghdad.
Police said that 25 people were wounded.
A medical official in a nearby hospital confirmed the casualty figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to talk to journalists.
Violence has risen dramatically in Iraq in recent months. Civilian targets such as cafes and markets, frequently in Shiite areas, have been favorite targets for insurgents.
