I-Pass users 'want the dinger back' -- may get it
The Illinois State Toll Highway Authority is considering bringing back I-Pass transponders that beep after a toll is paid.
Tollway authority chairman John Mitola said he will "aggressively push" the E-ZPass Interagency Group -- which oversees toll collection in Illinois -- to start offering transponders that make a sound after passing through a toll plaza. The sound will let drivers know their I-Pass accounts are in good standing, he said.
"Some people will have to pay a little extra for them, but I think a lot of people will want to," Mitola said. "They want the dinger back."
The move comes after thousands of I-Pass customers were sent bills for unpaid tolls and fines because they were unaware of problems with their accounts.
