Truck damages bridge beam on Edens
An accident on the northbound Edens Expy. early Tuesday caused damage to an overpass that cut traffic to one lane during the morning rush hour.
An oversized truck, believed to be a tanker, caused "major damage" to a beam on the south side of the Winnetka Road bridge, said Mike Claffey, an Illinois Department of Transportation spokesman.
Traffic on the outbound Edens was able to return to two lanes by 7:40 a.m. Tuesday. Traffic is down to two from three lanes in both directions on the Edens due to construction.
Eastbound traffic on Winnetka at the bridge will go to one lane from two lanes for a few months until the damage can be repaired. It won't affect the Edens going forward, Claffey said.
The accident caused a "really bad" morning outbound commute -- with a trip from Lawrence to Lake-Cook Road taking one to two hours, Claffey said.
"It's an unfortunate situation obviously," said Claffey. "We don't expect problems for the rest of the day."
