CTA temporarily closing Kimball Brown Line terminal

Updated: August 14, 2013 6:06AM

Starting early Saturday, the CTA is shutting down the Kimball Brown Line terminal for nine days.

The temporary shutdown is so crews can replace about 700 feet of 50-year-old track and rail ties and the electrical and signaling systems along the three sets of track feeding into the station.

“These tracks have been in service since this portion of the Brown Line was extended back in 1963, and repair work is no longer sufficient — everything must be replaced in its entirety,” said CTA President Forrest Claypool.

The work is supposed to last from 2 a.m. Saturday until 4 a.m. Monday.

The No. 82 Kimball bus will be rerouted during the work to serve the Kedzie station. Northbound buses will travel via Kimball, Montrose and Kedzie to Lawrence, then follow their regular route north on Kimball. Southbound buses will follow the opposite route.

About 1.3 million riders a year use the Kimball station, according to the CTA.
