Metra’s police force is getting out of their patrol cars and spending more time on trains and platforms, talking with riders and conductors, officials with the transit agency said Wednesday. The new safety initiative merely redeploys the existing 100-person Metra police force and is not a response to a specific crime concern, Metra officials said. It was conceived by Metra CEO Alex Clifford and Metra Chief of Police James Sanford as an attempt to make the new riders who often join Metra in the summer more comfortable, officials said.
