Weekend Green Line shutdowns start Friday night

Updated: March 20, 2013 11:40PM

The first of at least four weekends of Green Line shutdowns begins this Friday as officials prepare tracks to handle the extra traffic they’ll face during the $425 million Red Line South reconstruction.

The last two stops of the Green Line’s Ashland branch — the Ashland/63rd stop and the Halsted stop — will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday.

As an alternative, free bus shuttles will ferry customers from the two shuttered stations to the Red Line Garfield Station. The shuttles will run every 10 to 15 minutes during regular Green Line hours, CTA officials said.

The same two stations face similar weekend shutdowns starting Friday, Mar. 29; Friday, April 5; Friday, April 12; and, if weather-related delays are encountered, Friday, April 19.

Work during that time will help prepare the tracks for the extra traffic they will bear starting May 19, when all Red Line stations from 95th to Cermak will be shuttered and bus shuttles will route commuters from those stations to the Green Line’s Garfield station.

Red Line trains will run on the South Side portion of Green Line tracks through Oct. 20, using the Ashland end of the Green Line as a turnaround area, CTA officials said.

In addition, a series of South Side street and alley closures are expected to begin Friday to repair CTA elevated tracks.

For the next two weekends, starting at 8 p.m. Friday until 4 p.m. Monday:

■ The alley below the CTA tracks, running from East 14th Place to East 16th St., will be closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

■ East 14th Place will be closed from 10 East to 35 East.

■ The street parking lanes on the north side of East 14th Street will be closed from 2 East to 10 East.

In addition, for the next two weekends, from 8 p.m. Friday til 8 a.m. Monday, East 13th Street will be closed from 1 East to 14 East.
