Huntley: Dems had energy needed to win

The biggest winner: President Barack Obama, liberal Democrats and their coalition of women, Latinos, African Americans and young voters. The conventional wisdom was that the energy was on the Republican side, but Obama’s team proved that wasn’t so.
$100 million doesn’t go as far as it used to: Linda McMahon spent nearly $100 million in two failed attempts to get elected to the U.S. Senate from Connecticut.
Was his loss God’s will? Richard Mourdock, the GOP candidate for the U.S. Senate in Indiana, a Red State that Mitt Romney easily won, tanked his campaign and lost to Democrat Joe Donnelly because of Mourdock’s remark that it’s God’s will when a rape victim gets pregnant.
Even dumber than Mourdock: Todd Akin had a gimme race to take Missouri’s U.S. Senate seat from Democrat Claire McCaskill but blew it by offering up the ugly, offensive concept of “legitimate rape.” He will live out his life as a pariah in the GOP. His grandchildren will cringe when they read about him in the history books.
The biggest loser: Senate Republicans. They had to defend only 10 seats while the Democrats had to protect 23 seats, a golden opportunity for Republicans to capture control of the Senate. But the GOP failed, in part because of nominating fringe candidates in places like Missouri and Indiana.
