what If . . .

Q. How will I know if there’s a Chicago Teachers Union strike?

A. A strike is expected to shut down classes Monday unless the Chicago Teachers Union is called to vote before then on a new contract, or on a strike deadline extension. Monitor suntimes.com for developments.

Q. If there’s a strike, where can I take my child?

A. Chicago Public Schools are opening 144 schools as Children First contingency sites. They will offer CPS students a free breakfast and lunch, as well as activities, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. weekdays.

Q. How do I sign up?

A. CPS officials caution that the sites are intended for kids whose parents have not been able to make other alternate arrangements. Although Children First sites will not turn any child away, parents are encouraged to sign up first at www.cps.edu/childrenfirst or by calling 311. Parents will need their child’s student ID number, which is on all CPS progress reports and report cards. It also can be found by visiting the Manage Students page in the CPS Parent Portal.

Q. Can I pick the contingency site I want?

A. Students will be assigned to the contingency site closest to their home. If this option is not possible for you, discuss the matter with 311.
