Not so golden years
Don't look, I thought. What's the point? Why torture yourself? The stock market tumbles, of course your 401(k) goes down. There's no need to check the actual figure. Don't look.

Congress fixed it?Sure
A guy takes vacation for one week, and what happens? The whole financial system faints, swooning into the arms of Congress, which after some initial dithering catches it -- a "rescue" scary in itself and should put to rest any residual hopes that Somehow Everything Will Be OK. (Just try out the sentence. "The situation looked bleak, then Congress fixed it." Won't happen. Watch: We'll spend the $700 billion and the economy will still crumble).

Leaders don't 'suspend'
So let's say John McCain becomes president and really, that has to be the square where you'd put your chips, alas, were you forced to bet the ranch on the outcome right now.

McCain's 'experience'
This is what I don't understand. Perhaps you can explain it. These guys running for president, we're supposed to judge them not only on what they say now, but on what they've done in the past.

Must attention be paid?
We are familiar with lies. We already know that they are bad and look down upon people who are revealed as habitual fabricators. Liars are not only deceptive, but insulting too, because they expect us to believe them.

Feeling swamped?
So let's assume that Monday will be sunny, while keeping in mind that the weather people are often wrong, often enough to raise the question of why we bother paying attention to weather forecasts in the first place, except perhaps as idle entertainments, like reading the horoscope.

Unthinking confidence
This political stuff is addictive. I see now why people spend their careers swirling the tea leaves and studying the duck entrails. Frankly, after I wrote about Gov. Sarah Palin on Friday, the response was enough to keep a dozen psychiatrists busy and fascinated for the rest of their careers.
