Bodyguard brouhaha?

Sneed has learned Mayor Daley is requesting a retinue of at least three — around the clock — Chicago Police bodyguards from his mayoral security detail to accompany him into the private sector!

† Sneed also hears whispers Mayor Daley, who retires May 16, wants two vehicles at his disposal; one for himself — and one for his wife, Maggie.

† The request for personal security by Mayor Daley, concerned about serious safety threats, resulted in “the Chicago Police Department contacting the Secret Service to determine whether such security was necessary,” a top source said.

† The upshot: “It was determined Mayor Daley needed the security for a period of time,” the source added.

† What has yet to be determined is how long that period of time would be.

† A second Sneed source claims Mayor Daley initially asked for five bodyguards, but that may have included a number needed for constant surveillance.

† A history note: Although Mayor Jane Byrne, who lost her re-election bid to Harold Washington, did not leave office accompanied by a bodyguard detail, Sneed is told Mayor Eugene Sawyer — who occupied the office for a short period of time — was given a bodyguard. (Mayor Washington died in office.)

† The buckshot: In a time of economic downturn, such surveillance is gonna cost the city big bucks, and may cause a brouhaha.

Stay tuned.

The Peterson file . . .

Sneed is told accused wife murderer Drew Peterson, who had a wedding photography business as a side job for 25 years, watched the entire royal wedding from his Will County jail cell.

“He photographed hundreds of weddings,” said a source. “He told me he liked Kate Middleton’s wedding dress — but someone should have told Victoria Beckham her hat blew forward.”

†Sidenote: Peterson, who’s been in jail for two years awaiting trial for the murder of his third wife, Kathleen Savio, and is doing step aerobics and martial-arts routines in his cell to lose weight, is up to 500 pushups a day and has lost 30 pounds. “He does his pushups 50 at a time, once an hour, for 10 hours,” the source added.

Is this a message from Mars or what?

Osama drama . . .

The compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, where uber terrorist Osama bin Laden was permanently removed from this earth, may be surrounded by a farmer’s field of cabbage and veggies — but Sneed is told it is not far from a golf course.

Cop shop II . . .

Dusting & Cleaning? Incoming Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy, who has yet to be approved by the City Council, has asked for the resumes of all top cop command staff — and wants pictures accompanying the resumes? Huh.

The royal wedding . . .

England’s royal couple, a k a Wills & Kate, who apparently call each other “Billy” and “Baby” in private — are back from their two-day post--wedding getaway, and will NOT have a servant in attendance at their cozy cottage near Prince William’s military base.

Update: Now officially known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Buckingham Palace officials will have to curtsey to former commoner Kate.

So who curtseys to whom in the royal structure? Here’s a tip from a report in London’s Daily Mail: If Queen Elizabeth comes into a room, Kate curtseys.

If Camilla (Kate’s new stepmother-in-law) appears with Kate’s father-in-law, Prince Charles, Kate would curtsey to her.

But if Prince Charles is absent and Prince William is present, then Kate outranks Camilla — who should curtsey to her.

And if you can make sense of this, let me know.

I spy . . .

Actress Jennifer Beals dining at Gene & Georgetti Tuesday — and actor Tom Hanks stopped into the restaurant later with his son, Chet, who studies at Northwestern University . . . On Monday Croatian President Ivo Josipovic, whose father was a Nazi resistance fighter in Yugoslavia, visited the Illinois Holocaust Museum in Skokie . . . Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani dining at Pane Caldo last Wednesday.

Sneedlings . . .

Today’s birthdays: Chris Brown, 22; Danielle Fishel, 30; Tina Yothers, 38;
Brian Williams, 52 and Dick Mell and Arny Granat, both ageless.
