Ald. Bernie Stone out of the mayoral raceĀ
Michael Sneed
Ald. Bernie Stone's son Jay filed his nominating petitions for mayor.
*He needed 12,500 signatures.
*He logged 280 signatures.
*He will not be running for mayor.
Where's Rahm- - -
Memo to those who think mayoral hopeful Rahm Emanuel does not actually stay in the $1,500-a-month rental apartment in an old River West industrial building: Think again.
*To wit: The political juggernaut has been spotted jogging, hanging out at the Match Box bar and stopping at the CVS pharmacy across the street, where Rahm buys five different newspapers (the Sun-Times, Trib, Crain's, Wall Street Journal and New York Times) at 6:30 a.m. every Sunday.
Say what, Rahm- - -
Word the company run by Rahm's talent agent brother, Ari Emanuel, has packaged an eight-episode Starz deal starring actor Kelsey Grammer as the powerful mayor of CHICAGO brought this response from Rahm's spokesman Ben LaBolt: "I doubt we will bite on this one. But we will discuss."
Please do.
Who's helpin' Halpin-
A Sneed source paid a courtesy/ fact-finding call at the home last week of mayoral hopeful Robert Halpin, the Rahm renter who refused to vacate Emanuel's home before his lease was up.
*The kicker: "The place was swarming with people circulating Halpin's election petitions, and four of the five were African-American," said Sneed's source. "It's kind of ironic because the mayoral race has become a battle amongst African-American candidates seeking a clear shot at the job."
A Jolie jot . . .
Once again, it's actress Angelina Jolie to the rescue of needy children -- and Chicago is receiving her largess.
*To wit: Sneed is told Jolie just donated $150,000 to SOS Children's Village, a not-for-profit group that provides a home for siblings in foster care at 76th and Parnell.
*$$$$: "The money is the amount it takes to care for four children during a long-term, three- to five-year stay at SOS, said SOS's USA CEO Heather Paul.
*Update: Jolie has pledged to visit the Chicago SOS Village next time she is in the Midwest, said Paul. "She and [hubby] Brad Pitt have visited international SOS locations, including her overnight stay in a modest SOS house outside Port-au-Prince following the earthquake in Haiti."
*Actor Christian Bale, who learned about SOS while filming "Batman" in Chicago, is another SOS champion, visiting the South Side site twice last summer. He plans to start a similar SOS program in California.
I spy . . .
What! No quinoa- A casually dressed Gwyneth Paltrow, in town filming "Contagion," spotted lunching on grilled cheese and tomato soup Friday at the posh RL restaurant with a friend from Chicago. . . . ESPN host Michael "Pardon the Interruption" Wilbon spotted at Sepia restaurant in the West Loop Friday night.
Fair warning!
The men's room: Auctioneer Leslie Hindman on a roll: Not only did her firm auction off the death mask of legendary criminal John Dillinger, but a handwritten draft chapter from Mark Twain's A Tramp Abroad, just sold for 79,300 smackerooleees! Yipes!
