Rahm’s da guy!
The shutdown solution . . .
Sneed hears Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who was President Barack Obama’s former White House guard dog — a k a Rottweiler — and most effective chief of staff . . . has been a hush-hush top point man for his former boss on the government shutdown.
◆ Hmmm: Isn’t that why the Rahmster skipped the City Council debate on mandatory-minimum gun sentences Wednesday — although he did make part of the meeting — on the day Obama won the shutdown match?
◆ Translation: Sneed is told Rahm’s iron stomach is a balm to Obama’s political indigestion because the victory could be pyrrhic — it comes with a truckload of loss.
◆ Word is Rahm has been in frequent contact with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who is being credited for her role in helping to get a deal to end the shutdown.
◆ The ax man: Sneed also hears that David Axelrod, Obama’s former senior strategist, a k a golden retriever with incisors — was also hauled into the White House strategy game.
Rahm ’em . . .
Sneed hears Rahm has ruffled the feathers of the city’s Italian-American leaders for failing to attend Monday’s Columbus Day Parade. “He’s the first Chicago mayor not to attend the event,” a source said.
◆ Quoth a Rahm spokesman: ”The mayor had at least three city events he had to attend that day, and has promised to make up for it at a future event.”
Double J’s way . . .
A prescient note: The Rev. Jesse Jackson, who is never at a loss for words, tweeted this piece of political palaver Wednesday:
@RevJJackson: “The Senate has come to an agreement today but only until Martin Luther King’s birthday. That is a day for action and we should stay tuned.”
Tips and twaddle . . .
Here ye! Here ye! Singer Beyonce needs her dressing room temperature to be exactly 72 degrees. . . . Mega-billionaire Warren Buffett plays the ukulele to relax. . . . Legendary cartoon master Walt Disney had an apartment at Disneyland on Main Street USA. . . . and England’s Prince William is practicing for his first investiture ceremony by pinning medals on servants.
And how was your day?
The king’s mess . . .
Legendary singer Harry Belafonte, 86, a longtime civil-rights activist, has filed a federal suit in New York against the three heirs of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.!
◆ To wit: Belafonte is seeking the return of three documents he claims were given to him personally by King.
◆ The flip side: King’s children claim the documents were taken without permission and belong to the estate. They stopped Belafonte from auctioning them off for charity in 2008.
He’s still around . . .
Former Mayor Rich Daley tossed a private fund-raiser for the Rev. Michael Pfleger, pastor of the Faith Community of St. Sabina, at Luxbar on Tuesday night, attended by his former press secretary and top aide, Jackie Heard;Elzie Higginbottom; John Rogers; Steve and Peggy Lombardo, and Terry Newman. “It was nice to see the mayor still involved in the community,” said a source.
Tying the noose . . .
. . . or retying the knot?
◆ To wit: Rumors that Hillary Clinton’s top aide Huma Abedin’s marriage to sexting goofball Anthony Weiner is on the rocks may be just that: rumors.
◆ The Big Apple press claims the couple shared a romantic dinner at a trendy New York eatery Monday night looking “content and relaxed” and “happily posed for pictures.”
Pew news . . .
Praise the Lord . . . and oy oy oy! Pope Francis, an advocate of the poor who is shunning an opulent Vatican life, has asked for a briefing on the $42 million expenditure by German Bishop Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst on construction of a new bishop’s residence for himself!
