The other 'O' The 'O' identity . . .

October 31, 2009

It's not Oprah: It's a new book baptizing first lady Michelle Obama as "Mrs. O."

• The kicker: It's the same nickname ascribed to another fashion icon: Jackie O -- Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

• The surprise: Mary Tomer, the author of the book, titled Mrs. O: The Face of Fashion Democracy -- which catalogs the first lady's clothes and jewelry, has never met Mrs. Obama, according to the Washington Post.

Ah, politics . . .

A molehill memo: Don't bet that the recent meeting between David Axelrod, President Obama's senior adviser, and U.S. Senate hopeful David Hoffman is a big deal.

• The buckshot: Hoffman, who wants to fill Obama's old seat -- now occupied by Roland Burris -- asked for the meeting. (So did Dem Senate hopeful Alexi Giannoulias.)

• Axelrod tells Sneed: "I'm not soliciting visits from the candidates, as I have nothing to do with the race. Those guys asked to drop by, so I saw them as a courtesy. If others drop by, I'd probably do the same."

• Translation: The Obama administration will make no public primary endorsement, but Hoffman hired Axelrod's old political consulting firm anyway.

A Jackson memo . . .

Bite 'em: The death of singer Michael Jackson has not only rekindled an interest in all things Jackson, but now comes word the mold for Jackson's "Thriller" fangs will be auctioned off in New York next month. There ya go.

Jon and Kate, etc. . . .

Media Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, who is now counseling uber TV dad Jon Gosselin on his inappropriate celebrity behavior, may have been famous for advising Michael Jackson -- but the former Oxford University rabbi says he has played host to, and debated, Mikhail Gorbachev, Professor Stephen Hawking, Deepak Chopra, Benjamin Netanyahu and Elie Wiesel. (By the way, Gosselin describes himself as half-Korean and half-Jewish.)

The Cubbie corner . . .

Typecasting: New Chicago Cubs owner Tom Ricketts, who will be his family's point man, chose the Wrigleyville eatery of Cubs legendary broadcaster Harry Caray to lunch with his family Friday. Now, let's see if Ricketts enlists the help of Grant "Bartman Ball" DePorter, president of Harry Caray's Restaurant Group, to help dispel the Cubbies' longtime curse.

Cop shop . . .

Canine capers: Cook County sheriff's K-9 dog Ridges, who just helped nab a man who fatally stabbed a man and injured the child he was holding, is named after sheriff's police officer Michael Ridges, who was killed in the line of duty in 1985.

Boo!

As per Sneed's tip last week, Gov. Quinn passed out candy to any trick-or-treater under 12 who came to the governor's Springfield mansion Saturday. Quinn stuffed Halloween bags from the top of the stairs of the mansion.

• The flip side: President Obama and his wife, Michelle, passed out candy to more than 2,000 elementary students who were invited by the Education Department to trick-or-treat at the White House.

Sneedlings . . .

• Grow 'em: A new state-of-the-art greenhouse for student use will be donated and built Monday at Austin High School on the West Side by employees of Chartwells-Thompson Hospitality, the major food service provider for Chicago Public Schools . . . Sunday's birthdays: Lyle Lovett, 52; Anthony Kiedis, 47; Jenny McCarthy, 37; and Phil Wolin, ageless . . . Monday's birthdays: David Schwimmer, 43, and K.D. Lang, 48; and belated wishes to Alex Dana.
