Sneed has learned former mayoral bodyguard Sam Roti, the last person to head former Mayor Richard M. Daley’s detail, has been called for questioning by special prosecutor Dan K. Webb’s office investigating the 2004 death of David Koschman.Koschman was allegedly punched by Daley’s nephew, R.J. Vanecko, who pleaded not guilty Monday to involuntary manslaughter.
◆The buckshot: Sneed hears Roti, who agreed to testify rather than be subpoenaed, served as a mayoral bodyguard since 1989 — and was placed in charge of the Daleys’ security detail in 2004, months after Koschman died. Roti is scheduled to be questioned Wednesday at the prosecutor’s headquarters at 35 W. Wacker.
◆The upshot: Webb’s office is said to be seeking information about the transport of Vanecko when in the company of Daley’s children — who were entitled to rides from the bodyguard detail — and any relevant information involving the timeline in the Koschman death probe. They’ll also ask if Roti’s promotion had anything to do with the Koschman case. Stay tuned.
The Jackson file...
It sure looks like Double J is hoping to replace Triple J.
◆Translation: Sneed is told Jonathan Jackson, the professorial brother of former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., is now polling whether to make a run for the job vacated by his elder brother.
◆Further translation: Sneed hears Jonathan, who is this/close to his father, Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. — and is national spokesman for his father’s Rainbow PUSH Coalition — has a thumbs-up from Dad on the polling front.
◆To wit: In a phone interview, Jonathan Jackson tells Sneed: “I am very aware of the filing deadline for the office in January, and polling is now being done. But I am focusing on grading papers right now.” Jackson, who teaches business at Chicago State University and has an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, would ostensibly have a head start in the race: His brother, who has not been at work since last June due to treatment for bipolar disorder, won by a landslide (63 percent of the vote) during the last election. He resigned just before Thanksgiving, acknowledging he was under federal investigation.
◆Health report: So how is JJJr, who is no longer being treated as an in-patient at Mayo Clinic and is now cared for by his wife, Ald. Sandi Jackson, in the couple’s Washington, D.C., home? “He has his up days and his down days,” said Jonathan Jackson.
The Jackson file II ...
Sneed hears Ald. Sandi Jackson has confided to friends she may have to quit the City Council — depending on what happens to her husband in his battle with the feds — and seek a job in Washington, D.C., so she can support her family.
Background: Word is their savings have been depleted due to her husband’s battle with bipolar disorder, and Jackson has not ruled out a run for her husband’s vacated Congressional seat if she’s drafted with a groundswell of support. This would enable her to stay in Washington to care for her husband and children, who attend school there.
Foreground: However, her aldermanic office denies she’s seeking her husband’s old job.
This & that...
◆ Hill ill: The indomitable Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is, well, domitable... Clinton, felled by a stomach virus over the weekend, was forced to postpone her trip to Morocco to meet about Syria’s opposition forces. Translation: She took a day off to get well.
◆Glub: Now comes word Aussie actor Jason Clarke, who plays a CIA interrogator in the upcoming hunt for Bin Laden flick “Zero Dark Thirty,” submitted himself to waterboarding to prepare for the role.
A Mitt bit...
Punch ‘em: In case you are still withdrawing from post-Mitt presidential melodrama: Romney met with boxer Manny Pacquiao in the locker room before his Las Vegas fight Saturday night — just before Pacquiao got knocked out in the sixth round.
Lip lore: Candace Jordan, the social scrivener who seems to be at every party and society event and is sooooo very sociable and well-liked, is having a lipstick named after her by CAMP Cosmetics founder Michael Perich, who has a shop in Glen Ellyn. “It’s a perfect coral,” chirped Candace, who could soon be on everybody’s lips!
Ho! Ho! Help! Detectives investigating a child-abuse case are playing Santa for two children, and they need help. The case came to light when a 6-year-old boy told one of his teachers that he and his sister, 5, were being abused. They have since been removed from the care of their grandmother.
