Here’s a Sneed tidbit to add to the obit of American Indian activist Russell Means, who gained international fame for leading the 1973 occupation of Wounded Knee in South Dakota. ◆A history note: As the first newspaper reporter to sneak into the FBI-surrounded village of Wounded Knee (a Time magazine reporter was already there), I asked the first villager I encountered to take me to whoever was in char ge. ◆The upshot: I was then led to a mobile trailer home — and when the door opened, I was introduced to Russell Means, who was reading a “G.I. Joe” comic book.

The pedophile priest scandal: A 10-year reunion of the National Review Board of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops selected to probe the clerical abuse scandal, which included U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, Illinois Supreme Court Justice Anne Burke, and former FBI bigwig Kathleen McChesney was held this weekend at top legal eagle Bob Bennett’s house in Washington, D.C.◆The upshot: “We all felt remorse that almost none of the 28 reform recommendations we made were not carried out,” said Judge Burke. “We love our Church, but we had hit a brick wall.”

Bum deal...

Bottoms up! British royal sister-in-law Pippa Middleton knows it wasn’t her talents that got her fame and fortu ne. It was her derriere.◆Quoth Pippa: “It is a bit startling to achieve global recognition... before the age of 30 on account of your sister, your brother-in-law and your bottom,” she writes in her party-planning book, “Celebrate,” due out Oct. 30.

Is it a Fluke?

Contraception advocate Sandra Fluke, who made headlines when radio ranter Rush Limbaugh called her a “slut” and a “prostitute” for backing insurance coverage for birth control — and was subsequently praised by President Obama for her support — made an Obama campaign stop in Reno, Nev., Saturday to talk about early voting.

◆Brit actor Dan Stevens, who plays Matthew Crawley — the romantic lead in the PBS series — told the New York Daily News: “It was a strange thing for Romney to say, especially since he claims to be a big ‘Downton Abbey’ fan. At least Big Bird can vote in the election!”
