Knee ‘Em...

Here’s a Sneed tidbit to add to the obit of American Indian activist Russell Means, who gained international fame for leading the 1973 occupation of Wounded Knee in South Dakota. ◆A history note: As the first newspaper reporter to sneak into the FBI-surrounded village of Wounded Knee (a Time magazine reporter was already there), I asked the first villager I encountered to take me to whoever was in char ge. ◆The upshot: I was then led to a mobile trailer home — and when the door opened, I was introduced to Russell Means, who was reading a “G.I. Joe” comic book.

Sneed is told basketball star Charles Barkley caused such a ruckus while watching the Pittsburgh Steelers play the Cincinnati Bengals at the Chicago Cut Steakhouse bar Sunday, he caused diners to leave their seats and cheer along w ith him.◆$$$$: When the Steelers won, Barkley bought the whole bar two round s of drinks.◆But wait, that’s not all! Also in the eatery were Chicago Bears Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall, who chatted up Barkley. Barkley “was so enamored by them, he picked up their check,” said a Sneed source. (Barkley was in town to host an ESPN Luncheon at Chicago Cut on Monday.)

Don’t mess with Anita! Sneed hears three women protesting Chicago NATO arrests plead guilty last Friday to misdemeanor trespassing charges when they tried to enter Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez’s executives offices after hours on July 2 by attempting to buzz themselves in after the office recept ionist had left.◆The buckshot: The women, Emily Day, 22, Jacqueline Spreadbury, 23 and Lindsey Herer, 34, were sentenced to six months of supervision and 20 hours of community service.

The pedophile priest scandal: A 10-year reunion of the National Review Board of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops selected to probe the clerical abuse scandal, which included U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, Illinois Supreme Court Justice Anne Burke, and former FBI bigwig Kathleen McChesney was held this weekend at top legal eagle Bob Bennett’s house in Washington, D.C.◆The upshot: “We all felt remorse that almost none of the 28 reform recommendations we made were not carried out,” said Judge Burke. “We love our Church, but we had hit a brick wall.”

Contraception advocate Sandra Fluke, who made headlines when radio ranter Rush Limbaugh called her a “slut” and a “prostitute” for backing insurance coverage for birth control — and was subsequently praised by President Obama for her support — made an Obama campaign stop in Reno, Nev., Saturday to talk about early voting.

◆The upshot: Only about 10 people showed up at the local Sak N’ Save to hear Fluke, according to the Reno Gazette-Journal.

Bird droppings: GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, who plans to cut federal finding for Public Broadcasting — even though he’s a fan of Big Bird — is also a fan of the hit PBS series “Downton Abbey”.

◆Brit actor Dan Stevens, who plays Matthew Crawley — the romantic lead in the PBS series — told the New York Daily News: “It was a strange thing for Romney to say, especially since he claims to be a big ‘Downton Abbey’ fan. At least Big Bird can vote in the election!”
