Dateline: St. Paul ... A top RNC official told Sneed GOP presidential contender John McCain’s campaign has raised approximately $7.5 million on the Internet since his selection of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate.

The kicker: But they are worried the big buck Mitt Romney donors in Illinois may zip their wallets due to disappointment in McCain’s decision NOT to name Romney as his running mate.

Ambush ’em ...

GOP bigwigs are hoping the surprise appearance of former President George Herbert Walker Bush will rev up the troops at the Republican Convention now that his son, President Bush, and veep Dick Cheney, have been diverted to the Gulf states due to Hurricane Gustav.

The women’s room ...

U.S. Rep. Judy Biggert, a Hinsdale Republican who is on a major Dem hit list for the west suburban seat she won in 1998, opted not to attend the Republican National Convention in order to continue the battle to retain her job. ... However, U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk, whose north suburban seat has also been targeted by the Dems, did decide to attend the convention.

Former Governor Jim Edgar, who told the press he is getting a kick out of the infamous Dem "Group Hug," which made headlines during the Dem National Convention in Denver, planned to give his wife, Brenda, a big hug when she celebrated her 60th birthday here today.
