Protest ’em . . .
Mayor Rahm Emanuel may be shaking down the private sector for millions to shore up the expenses of the upcoming G-8/NATO summits this spring, but will taxpayers have to eventually open up their wallets?
◆ Consider: Police Supt. Garry McCarthy plans to deputize out-of-state law enforcement personnel to handle the eventuality of civil unrest.
◆ The big question: Who will pay for housing, feeding and finding adequate living conditions for out-of-town cops? Cost of damage to property during the riots in London last summer cost $307 million, according to statistics outlined by Ald. Ed Burke, the city’s finance chief.
Fat chat . . .
Pass the butter? The plump/popular New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie may be calling for a 10 percent cut in his state’s income tax, but he sure doesn’t seem to be cutting the calories preempting him from a presidential bid and campaign cartoonery.
◆ ????: Does Christie’s lack of promised weight loss translate thus: He’s not eyeing a veep mate role via GOP presidential hopeful front-runner Mitt Romney?
The Fergie beat . . .
Blimey! The unfortunate Sarah Ferguson, the duchess of York, reportedly canceled a trip to New York this week because she fears arrest if traveling outside the United Kingdom.
◆ Explanation: Fergie is the subject of an international arrest warrant by Turkish authorities for secretly filming an expose of an orphanage in Turkey in 2008 — and has been warned she could be arrested if she visits any country like the U.S., which has an extradition treaty with Turkey.
Kate the Great . . .
Now comes word via London’s Daily Mail Brit women spend an average of $385 to look like Kate Middleton since she became the duchess of Cambridge.
Film fodder . . .
◆ The little Jack Russell Terrier that stars in the Golden Globes silent film “The Artist” is a foundling named “Uggie” that was ejected from two homes for being a pain in the neck.
◆ Actress Kate Winslet is set to play the romantic lead in the hit novel “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society,” which is being directed by Kenneth Branagh.
The Obama diet . . .
Credit first lady Michelle Obama, who is fighting national childhood obesity, for not choosing the uber-caloric Obama burger on the menu at the BLT steakhouse where her hubby took her to celebrate her 48th birthday Tuesday night. She apparently had steak instead.
This & that . . .
Tips & Twaddle: Credit political wag Greg Hinz for discovering former Chicago Transit Authority chief Frank Kruesi and wife, Barb, are raising goats in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina; kudos to Ald. Brendan Reilly for championing the cause of naming a city side street after the late, great Chicago Sun-Times champion James Tyree, former chairman and CEO of Mesirow Financial.
Shopping list . . .
If you’re looking for a dishwasher and ice machine owned by a famous couple, head to the ReStore in Stuart, Fla., where stuff once owned by Tiger Woods and ex-wife, Elin Nordegren, have been shipped.
◆ To wit: They were salvaged from the family house Nordegren had torn down last month to be sold by the not-for-profit Habitat for Humanity’s second-hand store.
Sneedlings . . .
Today’s birthdays: Danny Wirtz, 35; Luc Longley, 43, and Dolly Parton, 66.
