EDWARD MCCURRY

'Plain honest hard working people'

September 9, 2007
Barack Obama's great-great-great-great-grandfather Edward McCurry was a blacksmith, a trade he apparently handed down to his son, Harbin McCurry.

"In all the families that have converged to make up our family there have been a class of plain honest hard working people, and most of them were Baptists," according to a family letter written in 1931.

"In the old Bible you sent me, I found the record of the birth of Grandfather McCurry's children. He had given it to my Mother and when your father married my father gave it to him. All of grandfather's family were Baptists.

" . . . There is another thing about McCurry men. They were of strict moral habits.; came directly from Scotland. Edward and Samuel. Samuel once hired a man to plow and heard him swearing at the horse and promptly paid him off and said that any man that would use profane language could not drive his horses.

"The[y] both were blacksmiths. I have an old pair of tongs and a shovel that Samuel made."

This letter was written by Gabe Brown, a grandson of Edward McCurry, in 1931, and transcribed and supplied by Dr. Robert Mardock, husband of Mary Louise McCurry Mardock, a great-great granddaughter of Edward McCurry.
