Treasurer knocks Obama down in game of hoops

May 7, 2008

INDIANAPOLIS -- Barack Obama continued his Election Day tradition of playing basketball -- only to get battered when he was accidentally knocked to the ground by Alexi Giannoulias, the Illinois state treasurer.

David Axelrod, Obama's chief strategist, also played in the pickup game. Axelrod said Giannoulias' shoulder hit Obama in the chest as Giannoulias, who played pro basketball in Greece, was driving to the basket.

Giannoulias "bashed the ribs of the next president of the United States," Axelrod said. Obama "was knocked down."

Obama was bruised, but Axelrod said he didn't see a doctor.

12 Indiana nuns without IDs turned away at poll

About 12 Indiana nuns were turned away from a polling place by a fellow sister because they didn't have state or federal photo IDs.

Sister Julie McGuire said she was forced to turn away members of Saint Mary's Convent in South Bend, across the street from the University of Notre Dame, because they had been told earlier that they would need proper ID to vote but didn't have it.

The nuns, all in their 80s or 90s, came to the precinct anyway.

''One came down this morning, and she was 98, and she said, 'I don't want to go do that,' '' McGuire said. Some showed up with outdated passports.

She said the convent will try to get IDs for them in time for the general election.

''We're going to take from now until November to get them out and get this done," McGuire said.
