Obama wants to change our light bulbs

June 29, 2009

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama is launching a stepped up campaign to improve energy conservation in America, saying the savings will be substantial even though he acknowledges that “light bulbs might not seem sexy.”

Obama delivered a statement at the White House saying he’s asked Energy Secretary Steven Chu to develop tougher government efficiency standards for light bulbs, saying Chu “is working every single day” on the mission.

The president said that 7 percent of all energy consumed in America goes to light people’s homes and businesses, and that if the newer, more restrictive energy efficiency standards truly take hold, there could a savings of $4 billion a year by 2022.

He said his latest initiative “holds promise” for significantly cutting the use of energy across the country.
