Sun-Times to auction limited edition Obama prints
Ever since Oprah held up the Nov. 5 copy of the Sun-Times on her show and declared it the best post-election front page in the world, calls have been coming in from around the globe with requests for copies.
Now that front-page image is available for auction at eBay.com as a limited edition high-gloss giclee print.
The Sun-Times has sold more than 700,000 copies of the Nov. 5 paper, making it one of the best-selling issues in the paper’s 60-plus year history. While owning a copy of the newspaper makes a fine keepsake, the giclee print offers a chance to own a piece of history.
“With the newspaper, the value is to the individual because it’s part of history," said Willie Wilkov, senior director of promotions and marketing for the Chicago Sun-Times News Group. “But the print is a super-premium item with a finite number, so its long-term value is going to be higher.”
So why has this front page — of the thousands published throughout the world — struck a proverbial chord with so many people?
“I think it's the simplicity of it — less is more,” said Wilkov. “It’s an iconic image, and the 'Mr. President' line summarized the whole point with very few words.”
The high-gloss print is hand-made by Printmakers Chicago and signed for authenticity.
Only 44 prints will be made available to the public for purchase to commemorate the election of Barack Obama as the nation's 44th president.
Bidding for the prints starts at $350, and the auctions last for five days.
