Barack Obama gets break on anniversary flowers for Michelle
Don't tell Michelle Obama, but her husband bought her a cut-rate bouquet of flowers for their 16th wedding anniversary.
A bit flustered by the media swarm, Mary Darcy forget to charge the Democratic presidential nominee $5 for baby’s breath when he popped into Penny’s Flowers in Glenside, Pa., today.
“It just so happened that I quoted him $45 so I thought I better go with $45,” Darcy told the Sun-Times.
Obama, who spoke at a rally in Abington, Pa., picked up the flowers before flying back home to Chicago, where he was planning a romantic dinner with Michelle tonight. They married in Oct. 3, 1992 at Trinity United Church of Christ.
In Pennsylvania, photographers and cameras were already behind the counter when Obama entered the store.
“Hey, guys, how are you?” Obama said to the press. Noticing the presence of the of cameras, he said: “I wish I could just slip in and get some flowers for my wife.”
“He said he wanted to choose some flowers for his anniversary,” said Darcy, who led Obama back to the walk-in refrigerator to look at the selection. “He was thinking about red or yellow roses, but then he decided on white roses with baby’s breath, and he was going to take them to [Michelle Obama] tonight. He was looking at the white roses and thought they were the prettiest.”
White roses? Romantic?
“White is very romantic — it’s for purity,” Darcy said.
When Darcy came to the counter with the flowers, Obama’s aides ushered the photographers out of the way, and Obama said: “Don’t break anything. If you break it, you buy it.”
As Obama took the flowers, wrapped in cellophane, he thanked Darcy: “You did a really nice job. These are beautiful. I like the arrangement and everything. It looks nice.”
But before leaving, Obama was a bit anxious the flowers might wilt during his flight home.
“Now, this should hold OK for the two-hour flight?” he asked the flower shop owner, who said they’d be just fine.
