Obama taking after JFK, will deliver speech outdoors

July 8, 2008

For as little as $5, you could win a backstage pass to Sen. Barack Obama's acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention in Denver next month.

Obama's presidential campaign announced Monday that the candidate would step out of the closed Pepsi Center on the final night of the convention and deliver his speech in the open-air Invesco Field at Mile High, allowing 75,000 people -- not just the elected delegates -- to be there for the historic moment.

The last time a major party candidate gave an acceptance speech outside was 1960; John F. Kennedy accepted the Democratic nomination at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

Obama's campaign sent out an e-mail to supporters Monday, asking for another donation: "Free tickets will become available as the date approaches, but we've reserved a special place for a few of the people who brought us this far and who continue to drive this campaign.

"If you make a donation of $5 or more between now and midnight on July 31st, you could be one of 10 supporters chosen to fly to Denver and spend two days and nights at the convention, meet Barack backstage, and watch his acceptance speech in person."
