Learning cursive writing may become a state-mandated requirement for Indiana school children.

The bill filed in the Indiana General Assembly requires school corporations and non-public schools that participate in the state’s voucher program to include cursive in their curriculum.

The bill presents a dilemma for educators as school districts position themselves to better prepare their students for the digital age. Indiana is in the midst of implementing the common core standards that the majority of states have adopted. Those standards don’t specifically address cursive.

The Merrillville Community School Corp. is in favor of the bill. “Even though we live in an increasingly technological society, there still is a need for students to learn cursive, as signing their name for, among other things, government documents, is still a requirement,” Merrillville Community Schools Assistant Superintendent Mark Sperling said.
