The state signed a deal Wednesday with the Norfolk and Southern Railway to build the long-awaited “Englewood Flyover” that would clear up delays on the Rock Island Metra line.
The $133 million project should begin this year and be completed in two to three years, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation.
With competing train tracks now at the same grade at the targeted area, 40,000 Metra commuters on 78 trains a day find themselves sometimes waiting for a freight train or Amtrak train to pass.
Those delays will be gone with the flyover.
Metra says the current conflict creates 7,500 hours of delay for Metra passengers every year.
