Rep. Danny Davis was one of the Democratic congressmen who heeded President Obama’s call to vote for the compromise package that includes $700 billion in tax cuts for the wealthy as the price of extending unemployment benefits.
It was quite literally a call from Obama that helped persuade Davis to vote for the bill.
“There are hundreds of thousands of people in this country who would not have been able to receive any kind of unemployment compensation benefits without this — that was the big seller for me,” Davis said as he waited to catch a flight home from Washington Friday. “I agreed with the president that this was probably the best time to do it because if we go back in January, the Republicans would write the bill and it probably would not be as good for the middle class, as good for working families,”
