State Rep. elect Derrick Smith may stand trial for bribery charges next October.
A federal judge Wednesday set a tentative trial date for Smith on Oct. 21, 2013. The trial is expected to last a week.
Smith was expelled from the Illinois House following his spring arrest. He was re-elected to his seat earlier this month. Smith allegedly accepted a $7,000 cash bribe from an undercover FBI informant who claimed to be acting as an intermediary to a purported daycare operator wanting Smith’s help in obtaining a $50,000 state grant. Smith had written a letter of support for the daycare operator before taking the informant’s money, authorities said.
