President Barack Obama had a lot at stake on Election Day, so he wasn’t taking any chances on his pickup basketball game Tuesday afternoon by picking ringer Scottie Pippen to play on his three-man team.
◆ No surprise: Obama, who acted as his team’s coach, also chose his longtime basketball pal and former State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias as a teammate. He tweeted that their team won, vanquishing former Bulls guard Randy Brown, Reggie “Body Man” Love, and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.
Presidential best friend Marty Nesbitt was reportedly in attendance as well.
◆ The score: The Obama team won by 20 or so points... “like 102, 105, 108 or so to 80-something,” said Giannoulias after the game.
◆ The game, played at Attack Athletics on the West Side a little after 1 p.m. Tuesday, became a tradition during the Iowa Caucuses in 2008, according to campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt. Obama missed his ritual game before he lost the New Hampshire primary during the 2008 election, so he has made it a priority to play every Election Day since.
