Gov. Pat Quinn says he’s backing Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. in his congressional primary bid.

In a statement Sunday, Quinn says that Jackson has delivered for the residents of the 2nd District and cites the Democratic congressman’s role as a member of the House Appropriates Committee.

Quinn is also a Democrat and says Jackson deserves to go back to Washington.

Jackson first won office in 1995. He faces his first credible challenge from former one-term congressman Debbie Halvorson. The Democratic primary battle is one of the most intense in the March 20 primary election.

The newly-mapped congressional district runs from neighborhoods on Chicago’s South Side, through south suburbs and beyond Kankakee. It also includes parts of Halvorson’s old state legislative district.

Two Republicans are also on the primary election ballot.
