Drew's lawyer: Travolta pic proves gun was legal

BOLINGBROOK | Photo shows Peterson guarding actor

May 29, 2008

Drew Peterson's lawyer says a photo showing actor John Travolta signing his autograph should clear Peterson of gun charges.

Peterson's publicist, Glenn Selig, released the photograph of Peterson in his SWAT regalia, including a semi-automatic assault rifle he was arrested for owning last week. Travolta was in town to hype his 2000 film "Battlefield Earth."

"They were on their way to a drug bust when they got pulled off, then got assigned to protect John Travolta," said Peterson's lawyer, Joel Brodsky.

Travolta could end up a star witness in the Peterson saga if push comes to shove in Peterson's weapons case, Brodsky joked. "He'll have to fly into Clow International Airport and testify," he said.

Peterson was charged with felony unlawful use of a weapon for owning a rifle with a shorter-than-legal barrel.

Brodsky contends that Peterson was cleared to use the rifle in his SWAT duties.

Bolingbrook Police Chief Ray McGury said Peterson never asked for permission to carry the weapon.

Peterson is a suspect in the Oct. 28 disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy.
