Hunt for Stacy Peterson not over

She disappeared nearly 2 years ago, but sister persists

August 22, 2009

Stacy Peterson's sister Cassandra Cales led a well-publicized search for her missing sibling Friday morning.

TV news crews and about 30 volunteers gathered in the Ikea parking lot in Bolingbrook before embarking on a hunt for any trace of Drew Peterson's fourth wife in a wetland area a few blocks from the store.

"We just wanted to keep it out in the media that we're still searching for my sister," Cales said. She and her family have been out searching for Stacy almost every weekend, she said.

Friday's search was based on a tip Cales said she received months ago that Drew Peterson was seen walking in that area in the days immediately after Stacy's October 2007 disappearance. The area had been too wet to search until now, she said.

Stacy's family contends Peterson killed her. Peterson, who has not been charged in connection with Stacy's disappearance, claims she left him.

Peterson has been in the Will County Jail since May, when he was charged with the murder of his third wife, Kathleen Savio.

"It's always been on my mind since this happened. I just really felt like I wanted to be a part of it," said Kari Roskopf, of Lemont, who came out to search for Stacy for the first time. "I feel for this family and the children who have lost a mom."

Peterson is due in court Oct. 2, when a judge should decide whether his trial will be held in Will County.

That day, the judge also will hold a hearing on a new law allowing some hearsay in the court proceedings. The law might make it possible for prosecutors to present evidence that Stacy allegedly said Peterson killed Savio. Peterson's lawyers have asked the judge to declare the law unconstitutional.
