Court refuses to lower Drew Peterson's bail
An Illinois Appellate Court has refused to lower the $20 million bail that is keeping Drew Peterson jailed while he awaits trial on charges he murdered his third wife in 2004.
Peterson’s attorneys said in a statement they’re “disappointed” the appellate court has denied their request to reduce Peterson’s bail, which his defense team has argued is excessive.
The $20 million bail means Peterson, a former Bolingbrook cop accused of drowning Kathleen Savio in her bathtub during bitter divorce proceedings, would have to post $2 million to be released from the Will County Adult Detention Facility.
"We're disappointed in the ruling from the Illinois Third District Appellate Court, but we accept the court’s ruling,” attorney Joel Brodsky said. “However, we are also confident that as the weakness of the state’s case is exposed over the following weeks and months we will have another opportunity to ask for a reduction in bond."
The 55-year-old Peterson remains a suspect in the 2007 disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, though he has not been charged in that case.
