Drew Peterson gives 'Today Show' interview from jail
In a recent jailhouse phone call, Drew Peterson told NBC's "Today Show" host Matt Lauer the grand jury system that indicted him on two counts of murdering his third wife Kathleen Savio needs a serious overhaul.
"I truly believe if they wanted to they could have indicted [Lauer] for this incident," Peterson said, adding that grand jurors have no "education" on legal issues like rules of evidence.
The disgraced Bolingbrook police officer also said he's not trying to send any type of message to jurors with his ill-timed jokes, like calling his shackles "bling" and his prison uniform "spiffy."
"There's no book written on how I'm supposed to act," he said. "Would it be better if I hid my head down and tried to hide my face and hunched over and had tears in my eyes? No, that's just not me."
He added: "I'm not trying to send anybody any type of message. It's basically just what's coming out."
Peterson praised jail staff as "courteous and professional" and said his only human contact in isolation is with the guards and those bringing him meals.
He talks to his children every day, including the two teenage sons from his marriage to Savio and the young son and daughter he had with his missing fourth wife, Stacy Peterson.
The teenagers are aware of what's going on, but he tells the younger two children, "I'm just with the police right now, helping them."
All four children are living with his adult son, Stephen Peterson.
Peterson said he "never really expected to be arrested in either case." But he also said he wasn't surprised when he was arrested because he was tipped off by news crews outside his home the day of the arrest.
