DALLAS — The son of former Grambling State football coach Eddie Robinson has died.

Family members say Eddie Robinson Jr. died Wednesday night at a Dallas hospital after complications from a heart transplant. He was 70.

The younger Robinson played for his father at Grambling, and later worked for him as an assistant coach. He was often referred to as “Coach Jr.”

In a statement issued Thursday through the Football Writers Association of America, Mr. Robinson’s family said that even in recent months, Mr. Robinson “still had a great love for college football and Grambling State in particular.”

The elder Robinson died in 2007 at age 88. He coached 57 seasons at Grambling and won 408 games before retiring in 1997, the same year he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
