PEORIA — The longtime publisher of the Peoria Journal Star has died at age 68.

Family members said that John T. McConnell died Monday from complications of pneumonia.

Known as “Mac,” Mr. McConnell spent more than 25 years as the paper’s publisher and was president for nearly two decades. He retired in 2006.

Co-workers remembered Mr. McConnell as a mentor and a friend who cared deeply about both newsgathering and his community.

A graduate of Peoria High School, he was an Army veteran who replaced his father-in-law at the paper’s helm in 1991.
