Fewer bald eagles seen in downstate Alton this winter

Fewer eagles are being spotted in downstate Alton so far this winter, raising concerns about a drop in winter tourism in the region.

Scott Isringhausen, an eagle guide at Pere Marquette State Park, says the region is a great stopping place for eagles that leave the north when water freezes over. But with this winter’s mild weather, fewer birds have arrived.

That’s been frustrating for bird watchers and others who depend on tourism during the winter months.

Isringhausen says that between 20 and 30 eagles are at the park now. He’s optimistic that as the weather cools, more will arrive and stay in the area until early March.
