New York City power outages begin to mount as Irene nears

NEW YORK — More than 36,000 New York City and suburban homes and businesses have lost power as Hurricane Irene approaches the area.
Con Edison said about 12,500 New York City customers were without power early Sunday. The rest of the outages are in the city’s northern suburbs and on Long Island. There, the Long Island Power Authority is reporting almost 20,000 outages.
