9/11 accused said to refuse Guantanamo mental exam

MIAMI (AP) — An accused Sept. 11 conspirator at Guantanamo is apparently not cooperating with an effort to determine if he is competent to stand trial.

A lawyer for defendant Ramzi bin al Shibh says the prisoner would not meet with military mental health experts sent to interview him at the U.S. base in Cuba. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Kevin Bogucki says his client turned away the experts during a brief meeting last week.

Bogucki said Thursday he plans to ask the judge to change the makeup of the expert panel and grant more time for an evaluation scheduled to be completed by Feb. 1.

Prosecutors asked for the exam in December after bin al Shibh repeatedly interrupted court proceedings to complaint about noises and vibrations in his cell that deprive him of sleep.
