Updated: October 31, 2013 8:05AM

ROSWELL, N.M. (AP) — Chaves County authorities say an 18-year-old man died when he fell while “surfing” on the hood of a moving pickup truck.

The Roswell Daily Record reports that Sheriff’s Lt. Daniel Ornelas said the young man lost his balance, slipped and fell in front of the vehicle as it was being driven slowly by a friend.

Ornelas said the driver was unable to stop in time and that no alcohol was involved.

The identity of the victim of the Monday night accident was not immediately released

Sheriff’s Lt. Britt Snyder said the accident occurred in a sparsely populated area outside Roswell and that he wasn’t aware of any arrests.
