GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) — A Mississippi judge has sentenced a woman to jail for two days for falling asleep during jury selection in a murder trial and failing to return to court after a lunch break.
The Sun Herald reports that Harrison County Circuit Court Judge Lisa Dodson sentenced 31-year-old Mary Justine Carter for contempt on Friday. Carter also must pay a $100 fine.
Carter told the judge she didn’t realize she had fallen asleep during jury selection.
She also said she didn’t realize it was a murder trial and didn’t return to court after lunch because she needed to meet two of her children as they got off a school bus.
Under questioning, Carter agreed her mother would have picked up the children if Carter had asked her for help.
