Coast Guard picks up 66 Cuban migrants off Keys

MIAMI (AP) — Dozens of Cuban migrants have been returned to their Caribbean island after being picked up in the waters off the Lower and Middle Florida Keys.

The Coast Guard says the 66 migrants were repatriated to Bahia de Cabanas, Cuba, on Friday.

The migrants were taken aboard a Coast Guard cutter after four separate interdictions on Monday.

Thirteen migrants were found on an unseaworthy vessel south of Key West. Five others were found aboard a wooden rowboat south of Big Pine Key. Twenty-five more were picked up from a raft south of the Marquesas Keys. Another unseaworthy vessel was found south of Marathon with 23 migrants on board.

Capt. Mark Fedor says the migrants were “without a doubt rescued from the perils of the sea.”
