MONMOUTH — Warren County authorities say they found more than 60 cats living inside a western Illinois house.
Now the tenants may face charges.
The Daily Review Atlas reports the cats were removed from the Monmouth home on Thursday.
Warren County Animal Control Officer John Livingston says several frozen cat carcasses were also found in a freezer.
He says the cats all appear to be healthy. But the home was dilapidated and the conditions weren’t safe.
Livingston says between 60 and 70 cats were found, but investigators plan to return to the home Friday and say the number may go up.
The number of rescued cats overwhelmed the county animal shelter, which had to get help from nearby agencies caring for the felines.
