PEORIA — An Amur tiger at the Peoria Zoo has died after a short illness.
Zoo officials tell The Peoria Journal-Star that Kyra the tiger died Sunday evening. She was undergoing medical treatment but hadn’t been responding to the care.
The adult tiger came to Peoria in 2006 and gave birth to four cubs last summer. The cubs’ births were the first at the zoo in more than 30 years.
In a statement released Monday, zoo director Yvonne Strode says employees are “heartbroken” over the death of the tiger.
Authorities performed a necropsy on Kyra to determine how she died. But officials say the results have not yet been returned.
