Michigan district cancels classes after bus drivers absent

WALLED LAKE, Mich. — A suburban Detroit school district has canceled classes for the day after a number of bus drivers called in sick.

The Walled Lake Consolidated School District said in a posting on its website that students and staff involved in advanced placement testing Wednesday still must report to testing sites.

The Detroit News reports the closings affect about 15,600 students and could be in reaction to a recent school board decision to outsource the district’s bus service to a private transportation business. The jobs of about 100 bus drivers are at stake.

The school board voted last week to privatize bus service as part of a broader cost-cutting effort.
