Starved Rock State Park recovering from floods

Maps

UTICA, Ill. (AP) — Efforts are continuing at Starved Rock State Park to recover from last month’s flooding.

Crews are working this week to reopen entrance roads and remove mud and debris from picnic areas. The northern Illinois state park suffered damage after more than 5 inches of rain and heavy downpours caused flash flooding on April 18. The water piled sand onto roads and washed out road shoulders.

Officials said the building that houses the park office and conservation police won’t be reopening soon because of flood damage. However the visitors’ center didn’t flood because it was on higher ground.

Several trails opened over the weekend, but others still need work. In other areas bridges need to be reset because of the force of flash flooding.
