Police: NY woman scammed $300K from priest, others

OGDENSBURG, N.Y. — An ex-convict has been charged with scamming about $300,000 from a priest and his former parishioners in northern New York.

Bobbie Jo Zeller, 36, of Norfolk was arrested by state police Thursday and charged with grand larceny, identity theft and criminal possession of a forged instrument, local media outlets report.

Investigators say she fabricated hard-luck stories about having a sick child to scam a retired Roman Catholic priest and about 20 of his parishioners over a two-year period.

Officials say Zeller has two prior convictions for scheming to defraud. She’s being held without bail.
